The Third team, buoyed after their strenuous efforts against Westcliff, registered their first win of the season in a somewhat bizarre manner. Frank won a game by default against a player who was in the room for the entire half-hour but, due to a communications breakdown (i.e. his Captain didn't get up and talk to him) he was apparently unaware that he had been selected and simply ran out of time. It was Mike McDowell, who was playing fo the Firsts at the same time, who noticed that Frank had actually reproduced, move for move, a genuine Grandmaster game: Fischer once played 1 c4 and Oscar Panno didn't turn up either, although he at least knew he was supposed to be playing.
2 - 0 up after half an hour is a promising start and when Mark won shortly afterwards, Liam was quick to spot the opportunity and took a draw. Kimberley had to work a bit harder for her draw but 4 - 2 was an excellent result and has taken Customs III off the bottom of the table for the first time this season.
