First Customs Blitz, 24th October 2000

With no League Match and 12 members in attendance, we decided to run a Handicap Blitz Tournament. Two all-play-all League were to be followed by a play-off for pecking order. The time allowed for each complete game was 20 minutes, but where the grades differed by 10 points or more, one minute for every 10 grading points was transferred from the higher graded player's time to the lower graded's, the maximum transfer being 7 minutes (3 minutes' thinking time v 17 minutes). The overall winner would gain 8 Grand Prix points, the runner-up 7 and so on.

Group A Grade MJ PW RJ MHJ AJ JB Tot Pos
Mark Jones 117 X 0 0 1 0 1 2 4
Peter Walker 139 1 X 1 1 1 1 5 1
Rob Jellett 78 1 0 X 1 0 1 3 3
Melissa Hirst-Jones     29 0 0 0 X 0 0 0 6
Adam Jellett 31 1 0 1 1 X 1 4 2
Jamie Burgoyne 25 0 0 0 1 0 X 1 5

Mark Jones seemed to have trouble adjusting to the shortage of time (thank God Melvin Pool wasn't here!!) but Adam Jellett (hooray!) was putting everyone away quite nicely until he allowed a mate in 1 against Peter Walker (boo hiss!). Peter (boo hiss!) had little difficulty with any other opponent.

Group B Grade GW HW JG KHJ NJ MJ Tot Pos
Graham Walker 115 X 1 1 1 1 0 4 2
Heather Walker 106 0 X 1 1 0 0 2 4
Jack Granat 80 0 0 X ½ 0 0 ½ 5=
Kimberley Hirst-Jones 44 0 0 ½ X 0 0 ½ 5=
Nicholas Jellett 103 0 1 1 1 X ½ 3
Matthew Jellett 105 1 1 1 1 ½ X 1

In Group B, Matthew Jellett (loud noise) got off to a good start when he beat Graham Walker (morose moan), but Graham (morose moan) managed to sneak other wins, including a critical one against Nicholas Jellett (peevish whine) to take second place. Heather Walker (poisonous jibe) was not on form, losing to all three of Matthew (loud noise), Graham (morose moan) and Nicholas (not so peevish whine this time).

Then we came to the play-offs. The winner from each group played the runner up of the other, 3rd played 4th and so on until every player occupied a particular place from first to 12th. Both the top two boards went against grade. Graham (morose moan with just a hint of a gloat) won a pawn against Peter (boo hiss!) and then saw through the intended complications, winning a piece with an unstoppable mating attack. Matthew (loud noise) was being given a real roasting by Adam (hooray!) to the extent that onlookers were not certain which one was the higher graded. Eventually Matthew (loud noise) exchanged into a winning position, but his flag fell and the play-off for first place was between Adam (hooray!) and Graham (morose boo & moaning hiss). Graham (morose moan to the power of 10) went hunting for pawns and ended up getting his queen trapped by Adam (hooray!). Peter (morose & peevish moan) was two pawns ahead against Matthew (loud triumphant noise) when Peter (lugubrious whinge) mistakenly thought that Bishops on b3 defended rooks on g6 and that was more or less that.
